Our Functional Skills group has been putting the finishing touches on their ā€œWhat Is a Story?ā€ topic by exploring how writers create vivid and engaging settings through description.

To inspire their writing, students took part in an immersive walk through the nature reserve opposite school, using their senses to gather ideas for describing a woodland setting. Along the way, they listened carefully to birdsong, spotted signs of spring wildlife, explored the colours and textures around them, and even stopped to blow dandelions in the sunshine.

The experience encouraged students to think about how small details can help create atmosphere, mood and imagerywithin storytelling. By connecting their observations to descriptive writing techniques, learners were able to gather ideas in a meaningful and memorable way.

Adding to the enjoyment of the session, Agnes the therapy dog joined the walk, helping to make the lesson even more engaging and relaxed for everyone involved.

It was a fantastic opportunity to combine creativity, literacy and the outdoors, while encouraging students to see inspiration for writing in the world around them. 🌿✨
