It has been a high-energy week in the Music department! Our students have been diving deep into the world of performance, focusing on the technical skills that bring music to life.
The main focus this week was mastering chord progressions. Students worked specifically with A minor, E minor, and G major, practicing on both the keyboard and the guitar. It was wonderful to see their determination as they learned how to build each chord and worked hard to transition between them smoothly.
Exploring the Role of Chords
Beyond just playing, we took some time to understand the theory behind the sound. Students explored how chords act as the "glue" that holds a piece of music together, providing the foundation for melodies and basslines. We also experimented with the "mood" of music, identifying how Major chords tend to sound bright and happy, while Minor chords carry a darker, more somber tone.
Finding the Beat
Rhythm was also high on the agenda! To help develop their internal timing, students:
Recapped basic note values to build a strong rhythmic foundation.
Practiced with a metronome to master the art of keeping a perfectly steady beat.
Explored offbeat rhythms, which provided a fun and syncopated challenge.
The highlight for many was putting all these skills together to play along with a reggae band. This required great focus to stay in sync with the offbeat style, and the results sounded fantastic!
It has been a brilliant week of hands-on learning, and it’s been a joy to hear the school corridors filled with such a variety of sounds and rhythms.
Well done to all our musicians for their hard work and creativity! 🎶✨
