As part of our Latin lessons, pupils explored the ingredients and recipes available to the Romans while learning more about everyday life in the ancient world. They discovered that many foods eaten in Roman times are still familiar today, including herbs, fruits, cheese and olive oil.

To bring the topic to life, pupils tried making some Roman-inspired dishes themselves. They prepared hypotrimma, a delicious cheesy dip made with herbs and olive oil, along with a refreshing melon salad with mint dressing, both of which proved very popular.

During our discussions about Roman food, many pupils were surprised to learn that dormice were considered a delicacy, particularly among wealthier Romans. This sparked interesting conversations about how tastes and eating habits have changed over time.

As part of the lesson, we also explored the Latin words for different foods, with pupils enjoying spotting familiar root words and making connections between Latin and modern English vocabulary. It was a fantastic way to see how Latin continues to influence the language we use today.

A brilliant lesson combining language, history and a little bit of cooking!
