We are pleased to be introducing Accelerated Reader at Lord Gowthorpe’s Independent School to support reading development across the school and encourage a deeper enjoyment of books among our learners.

To begin the process, students have already started completing the Star Reading Assessment, an online tool that helps us understand each learner’s current reading level. This information allows teachers to guide students towards books that are both engaging and appropriately challenging, helping them make steady progress while enjoying what they read. The system also enables staff to track reading development over time and identify where additional support or challenge may be beneficial.

Strong reading skills are essential for success across all areas of the curriculum. Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that children who read for pleasure are more likely to achieve higher levels of attainment, while also developing stronger vocabulary, writing ability and overall communication skills.

Reading also has important benefits for wellbeing. A study from the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68%, helping individuals relax, improve concentration and support overall mental wellbeing.

Through Accelerated Reader, we hope to encourage all of our learners to read more often, discover books they genuinely enjoy and build the confidence to access a wide range of texts across the curriculum. As we integrate the programme further into daily school life at Lord Gowthorpe’s, we will also be sharing information about how learners can access the system at home and how families can help support reading beyond the classroom.

Below is a short guide for parents and carers explaining how Accelerated Reader works and how you can help support your child’s reading journey.

Accelerated Reader – A Short Guide for Parents and Carers

What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader (often referred to as AR) is a programme used in many schools to help develop and monitor children’s independent reading. It supports pupils in choosing books that match their reading ability while helping teachers track their progress over time.

The programme encourages pupils to read regularly, develop strong comprehension skills and build confidence as independent readers.

How Accelerated Reader Works

1. Reading Assessment (Star Reading Test)

Pupils begin by completing a short online assessment called the Star Reading Test, which identifies their current reading level.

2. Choosing a Book

Based on their results, pupils are given a reading range known as a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). This helps them select books that are neither too easy nor too difficult, allowing them to make steady progress.

3. Reading the Book

Pupils read their chosen book either at school or at home.

4. Taking a Quiz

After finishing the book, pupils complete a short online quiz that checks their understanding of what they have read.

5. Feedback and Progress

Teachers use the quiz results to monitor comprehension, support reading development and help pupils set appropriate reading goals.

Why Accelerated Reader is Helpful

Accelerated Reader helps pupils to:

  • Read more regularly

  • Develop stronger comprehension skills

  • Choose books at the right level

  • Take responsibility for their own reading

  • Track their progress and celebrate success

Teachers can also use the data generated by the programme to identify when pupils may need additional support or greater challenge.

How Parents and Carers Can Help

Parents and carers play a very important role in supporting children’s reading development. You can help by:

  • Encouraging your child to read regularly at home

  • Listening to them read or discussing the book together

  • Asking questions about the story or characters

  • Helping them find a quiet time and place to read

  • Celebrating their reading achievements

Even older pupils benefit greatly from discussing books with adults, as it helps deepen their understanding and enjoyment of reading.

Reading at Home Matters

Regular reading helps children to:

  • Improve vocabulary

  • Strengthen comprehension skills

  • Develop imagination and creativity

  • Become more confident learners across all subjects

Encouraging a love of reading is one of the most valuable things we can do to support children’s learning, both in school and at home.
