One of the most important parts of our work at Lord Gowthorpe’s is ensuring every student is fully supported through key transitions in their education. Whether students are joining us or preparing to move on to their next destination, we believe that careful planning, collaboration and understanding each individual’s needs are essential for success.
This week, Gorgi and Adele delivered a transition seminar for staff at York College, sharing how we support young people with SEND as they prepare for life after Lord Gowthorpe’s.
The session focused on helping college staff understand the individual needs of our students, particularly those who have experienced developmental trauma, autism, ADHD and anxiety. The training explored practical strategies that can make a significant difference during those first few weeks in a new environment, helping students feel safe, understood and ready to learn.
Topics included recognising the impact of developmental trauma, understanding behaviour as communication, building positive relationships, emotional regulation strategies, and the use of approaches such as the 5 Point Scale to support students in managing their emotions.
Strong communication between education providers plays a vital role in creating successful transitions. By working closely with York College, we can ensure that students leave Lord Gowthorpe’s with the confidence and support they need to thrive in their next chapter.
We would like to thank the team at York College for welcoming us and for their continued commitment to supporting our students as they progress into further education.
We look forward to continuing to work together to make every transition as positive and successful as possible.
