What happens when you combine real-world business, event planning, and a serious amount of math? You get our incredible student math project week! This week, our classroom transformed into a bustling boardroom as students took on the ultimate entrepreneurial challenge.
Here is a look at how we put our math skills to the test:
💰 The Financial Blueprint
Move over, Wall Street. The students were given a strict budget and tasked with planning an entire event from scratch. They had to negotiate and select staff, lock in entertainment, and hire food vendors. Every penny had to be accounted for, requiring precise calculations of total costs vs. projected profits.
📈 Visualizing the Feast
Once the food vendors were locked in, it was time for some data analysis. Students tracked and displayed the quantities of their chosen menu items using a variety of graphing techniques. From tally charts and vertical line charts to full-color bar charts and creative pictograms, the data never looked so delicious.
📐 Mapping Out the Venue
Location, location, location! Using their knowledge of area and perimeter, students became structural engineers for the day. They had to design the ultimate event layout, ensuring that food stalls, stages, and guest areas fit perfectly within their designated boundaries without causing gridlock.
💸 The Bottom Line: Tips & Refunds
In the real world, things change—and so did our project. Students had to pivot and use their percentage skills to calculate unexpected refunds for cancellations, as well as add in hard-earned tips for their hardworking staff.
The Verdict: Lord Sugar wasn't available to oversee the task this week, so we had to settle for Tom instead 🤷♂️. Luckily, Tom was highly impressed by the sharp wit, financial savvy, and incredible effort everyone put into their projects!
Thank you to all the mini-moguls for a fantastic week of learning!
